Surfers form Sumner have a are quite mello and don't tend to be too protective of their own break.[localisim]

We were often more tanned, often fitter and less likely to be involved in organised team sports.
Q5. How do you see the surfer scene at the moment?

Luke's Questions answered by Manu Schafer

Q1. How do you see yourself different from other people who don’t surf?
The saying goes[only a surfer knows the feeling]is so true. The buzz i get off quality waves even watching them. Most sports you have to pay, the ocean is free. I do anything to be there then it's good, up early, travel all night, it is very addictive and I'm in it for life.
Q2. Why did you begin to surf and why do you still do it now?
My brother bought me my first surfboard and since
then I've been hooked and wil surf till I drop. I just love the sheer power of a big wave picking you up and flowing with that wave.
Q3. What do you think separates the surfers in Sumner from other surfers around the world?
We don't get great waves in Sumner but we do appreciate it when they come. We have done well in comps considering our waves because we go out in any conditions.

Q4. How were you different from other non-surfers at school?
I found it hard to concentrate in class when i knew the surf was pumping. I travelled alot as well tp isolated beaches all over N.Z. (I have) alot of respect for the ocean.
Q5. How do you see the surfer scene at the moment?
Surfing has come along since I started, there's more respect for what surfers are doing and surfing as a sporty. It's very healthy at the moment. You can make a living out of surfing if you're at the top.
Q6. Define what you would call a classic surfer?
When the waves are pumping they drop any
thing to be there[work, girlfriend, comitments ect.] Constantly watching weather updates, predictions and virtual buoys to set up his week around the time the swell hits. The love of the ocean, leaving the beaches as they were when they arrived. Picking up rubbish and just enjoying natures beauty, the ocean.
